📸 Capturing the Majesty of Hubbard Glacier: A Strategic Approach with Time-lapse 🏔️🚢
Alaska is a land of untamed beauty, where glaciers stand as ancient sentinels and the icy wilderness meets the vast expanse of the sea. Amidst this awe-inspiring landscape lies one of the crown jewels of our Alaskan cruise: Hubbard Glacier.
The Strategic Vision:
As the Photo and Video Manager aboard our cruise ship, I understood the profound impact this majestic glacier could have on our guests. Every week, as we approached Glacier Hubbard Bay, I orchestrated a well-thought-out plan. The timing was crucial, as the play of light on ice and water was ever-changing. I ensured my team was at the perfect spot at the perfect time, ready to capture the glacier’s grandeur in its full glory. And I filmed every single guest who would get in the best spot (bow) to witness the beauty of nature and the stunning Hubbard Glacier.
Crafting Visual Stories:
Glacier Hubbard Bay wasn’t just another destination; it was a canvas of nature’s most exquisite artistry. With every click of the camera, we aimed to encapsulate the sheer scale and magnificence of the glacier. The objective wasn’t merely capturing images; it was about creating compelling visual narratives that would draw our guests into the enchanting essence of this glacial paradise. Ultimately, our aim was to entice them to visit the Photo and Video gallery, where they could enjoy the captivating pictures they adore and collect them all!
The Guest Experience:
Our efforts were not in vain. Guests were mesmerized by the stunning images displayed in our gallery. Each photo, a testament to nature’s grand design, beckoned them to explore further. We didn’t just capture images; we captured imaginations. It was not uncommon for guests to be so moved that they scheduled private shoots or invested in our specially curated photo packages, taking a piece of Alaska’s splendor home with them.
A Legacy in Pixels:
Amidst the icy splendor of Alaska, our mission extended beyond mere photography; it was about curating unforgettable experiences, one frame at a time. As the head of the Photo and Video department, my approach involved capturing the essence of every cruise, from dawn till the moment the ship bid farewell to the glacier. Utilizing two GoPro cameras equipped with robust power banks, I meticulously recorded captivating time-lapse footage, culminating in a promotional video showcased throughout the Photo Gallery and guest staterooms via IPTVs until the cruise finished.
This strategy not only garnered increased attention and foot traffic to the gallery but also contributed to elevated revenue across various segments, including photo package sales, retail transactions, private session bookings, and onboard sales. Amidst the breathtaking vistas of Hubbard Glacier, we didn’t just capture images; we immortalized moments, weaving a tale of natural grandeur for all to witness. If you were aboard the Holland America Line’s ms. Nieuw Amsterdam or ms. Oosterdam during 2016, 2017, or 2018 and recall standing on the bow during our Glacier visit, please reach out via email with your travel date. I have exclusive footage from that day that I’d be delighted to share with you, ensuring you relive the awe-inspiring experience once more.

At Hubbard Glacier, we embarked on a unique endeavor to encapsulate these fleeting moments from sunrise to sunset, creating an immersive experience that etched itself into the hearts of our guests.
I strategically mounted GoPro cameras in key positions on the ship – one on the bridge, capturing the majestic glacier from a bird’s eye view, and another atop the bow, framing the wonder of nature from the guests' perspective. As the sun cast its golden glow on the icy peaks, our cameras silently recorded every change in hue and light, preserving the glacier's beauty in a breathtaking time-lapse.
For many guests, their first sight of Hubbard Glacier was a moment of sheer wonder. We didn’t just capture the glacier; we captured their expressions – the widened eyes, the awe-struck smiles, the gasps of amazement.
